Pioneers Park Matraville
Construction of Lech Water Management System
This project required an upgrade to the drainage system at Pioneers Park in Maroubra to improve the water saturation issues experienced in the northwest corner of playing field one.
A soft-spot in this corner was identified, which is a result of ground water seepage running from the upper sports fields (magnified by excessive amount of rain).
A sand-silt drainage system was installed as the best solution for the pooling water. This system required a series of small trenches cut across the entire field which drain away and off the field through a soaker pit and into the natural water table. The trenches are backfield with sand and turf re-laid on top.
Additionally, in the northwest corner a subsurface drainage system was installed to prevent pooling. The water is redirected into a soaker pit, which prevents excess water from running into the lower field, disperses it into the ground, before returning it to the water table below.
Key aspects included:
- Site clearing and securing the area
- Excavation
- Dewatering
- Installation of a surface and subsurface drainage system installation
- Soaker pit construction
- Installation of sand silt drainage systems in the lower sports field
- Landscaping and other miscellaneous civil works
